Our history

The UK Green Building Council was launched by the construction and property industry at the Ecobuild conference and exhibition in London in February 2007.

We were established to offer clarity, cohesion and leadership to a disparate sector, and to campaign for a sustainable built environment.

The organisation was set up with the invaluable help and commitment of a core group of founding members (see bottom of the page). Many of these organisations continue to provide support to us as ongoing members.

UK-GBC recruited more than 100 member organisations in its first year, and today we enjoy the support of over 400 members, spanning a variety of sectors within the built environment.

Over our ten year history, we have convened a number of Task Groups and produced reports on key policy issues, led successful campaigns, launched a multi-disciplinary learning and development programme, introduced a Member Commitment for member organisations and created an online platform for sustainability resources (Pinpoint).
