Roadmap Introduction

Welcome to our interactive 'Roadmap to Sustainability'. The roadmap is designed to provide a shared vision of a sustainable built environment and it brings together government targets, policies and industry initiatives, allowing us to set priorities and assess where we can best intervene to bring down the barriers to sustainability.

You can navigate the roadmap in the following ways:

  • Browse the roadmap by clicking a 'pin' to view the final target and associated [] key dates, [] resources, [] events and [] UK-GBC actions.
  • Search the roadmap by choosing 3 criteria from the drop down boxes on the left
  • Get an overview of the whole sector by scrolling to 2040 and clicking on that pin

The roadmap is based around:

  • The lifecycle of the built environment (6 phases from planning to end-of-life)
  • Building type (new/existing domestic and non-domestic buildings and infrastructure)
  • Key themes (climate change mitigation and adaptation; water conservation & biodiversity; materials & waste; sustainable communities)

UK Green Building Council: Statement of Member Commitment

As a member of the UK Green Building Council, we hereby agree to actively support and adhere to the Mission Statement and Objectives of the UK Green Building Council, and to contribute directly through our own organisation's activities, as set out below:

UK-GBC Mission Statement
To dramatically improve the sustainability of the built environment by radically transforming the way it is planned, designed, constructed, maintained and operated.

UK-GBC Objectives

  • To campaign for action, by government, industry and any other body who has a role to play in delivering sustainability in the built environment
  • To produce a roadmap to a sustainable built environment, setting targets and identifying what needs to be done by who and by when
  • To help forge a new partnership between government, industry and other stakeholder groups
  • To bring cohesion to the green building movement and provide clarity and a coordination of effort
  • To take a lead role in facilitating dialogue, always representing a progressive, positive, fair and solutions led approach to engagement
  • To help industry and other decision makers play their part in creating more sustainable buildings, both new and existing
  • To promote sharing of evidence-based technical knowledge, encourage research and innovation and the spread of best practice
  • To seek not to replicate work done by others in the sector, but to sign-post that work and seek to identify information gaps that need to be filled
  • To raise the standing of UK industry by helping member organisations to participate or contribute to international trade delegations, conferences and publications which support its aims
  • To develop and promote a toolkit of peer-reviewed and UK Green Building Council endorsed sustainability tools.

Member Commitment
We hereby commit to actively support the Mission and Objectives of the UK Green Building Council, and to continuously improve the way in which our organisation measures its sustainability impacts, publicly reports on these impacts and sets targets to reduce any negative impacts, in order to contribute to a more sustainable built environment.
