Roadmap Introduction

Welcome to our interactive 'Roadmap to Sustainability'. The roadmap is designed to provide a shared vision of a sustainable built environment and it brings together government targets, policies and industry initiatives, allowing us to set priorities and assess where we can best intervene to bring down the barriers to sustainability.

You can navigate the roadmap in the following ways:

  • Browse the roadmap by clicking a 'pin' to view the final target and associated [] key dates, [] resources, [] events and [] UK-GBC actions.
  • Search the roadmap by choosing 3 criteria from the drop down boxes on the left
  • Get an overview of the whole sector by scrolling to 2040 and clicking on that pin

The roadmap is based around:

  • The lifecycle of the built environment (6 phases from planning to end-of-life)
  • Building type (new/existing domestic and non-domestic buildings and infrastructure)
  • Key themes (climate change mitigation and adaptation; water conservation & biodiversity; materials & waste; sustainable communities)

Board and Committees

Advisory Board

At the inception of the UK-GBC, Founder Members pledged not just seed funding for two years, but also their time and energy. An initial Board of 14 was established, including 3 company directors (Chairman, Chief Executive and one other) who were unanimously endorsed by representatives of all Founder Members.  Click here for a list of our Advisory Board members.    Representatives from each of the 38 Founder Members also volunteered to join one of the three steering committees that were set up (Technical; Public Affairs; Membership – See below).

As the membership of the UK-GBC grows and as we look towards the end of this ‘founding’ period of the first two years, it has always been the intention to open up membership of both the Board and steering committees to non-Founder Members in a democratic process.  The process by which members are elected onto the Advisory Board is currently under review. A new Governance Code will be presented to the members at our first AGM on 18th March 2008

Technical Committee

It is the role of the Technical Committee to provide advice, guidance, resource and feedback to the UK-GBC executive on:

- Strategic direction and prioritisation of interventions
- Technical research and projects
- Technical events and activities
- Technical Policy decisions
- Dissemination of best practice
- Website (insofar as elements of the website are relevant to this committee’s responsibilities.

The Committee Chair and UK-GBC executive will liaise with the other committees on overlapping issues. Where appropriate, this will take place through project-specific Task Groups.  Overlap is most likely to occur with the Pubilc Affairs Committee regarding policy isssues.
25 member organisations are currently signed up to the Technical Committee. Currently these organisations are all Founding Members of the UK Green Building Council.  The process by which members are elected onto the Committee is currently under review.  A new Governance Code will be presented to the members at our first AGM on 18th March 2008.

UK-GBC Members can view the minutes and other associated papers for the Technical Committee by logging-in.

Public Affairs

It is the role of the Public Affairs Committee to provide advice, support, resource and feedback to the UK-GBC executive on:

- Political and Parliamentary communications
- Overview of government policy: development, consultations, and practical application
- The position and role of the UK-GBC in relation to other industry bodies
- Media communications
- External perception of the UK-GBC: political, industry, media and public
UK-GBC transparency
- Maintaining UK-GBC independence and objectivity
- Website (insofar as elements of the website are relevant to this committee's responsibilities)
- Overview of UK-GBC policy

The Committee Chair and UK-GBC executive will liaise with the other committees on overlapping issues. Where appropriate, this will take place through project-specific Task Groups. Areas most likely to overlap include:
- Media communications, particularly in relation to member activity and events (with Membership Committee)
- Policy issues (with Technical Committee)

18 member organisations are signed up to the Public Affairs Committee. Currently these organisations are all Founding Members of the UK Green Building Council. The process by which members are elected onto the Committee is currently under review. A new Governance Code will be presented to the members at our first AGM on 18th March 2008.

UK-GBC Members can view the minutes and other associated papers for the Public Affairs Committee by logging-in.

Membership Committee

It is the role of the Membership Committee to provide advice, support, resource and feedback to the UK-GBC executive on:

- Membership recruitment & targeting
- Membership categories, fees and benefits
- Membership events and activities
- Sponsorship and fund-raising
- Members' responsibilities to the UK-GBC
- Website (insofar as elements of the website are relevant to this committee's responsibilities)
- The position and role of the UK-GBC in relation to other industry bodies

The Committee Chair and UK-GBC executive will liaise with the other committees on overlapping issues. Where appropriate, this will take place through project-specific Task Groups. The most likely area of overlap is with the Public Affairs Committee regarding member communications, particularly in relation to member activity and events.

The Membership Committee currently has 9 members from the Founding membership. The process by which members are elected onto the Committee will be reviewed as part of a wider process of developing the UK-GBC's constitution and governance procedures to ensure appropriate transparency and opportunities for democratic election and participation by all members.

UK-GBC Members can view the minutes and other associated papers for the Membership Committee by logging-in.
