Government announces FIT level

CLEAN ENERGY CASHBACK GIVES RENEWABLES A REAL BOOST

The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has today welcomed the announcement by Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, which sets the level for the feed-in-tariff (FIT) for small scale low carbon electricity and also sets out plans to incentivise low carbon heat.

The FIT rewards households and communities that install small-scale low carbon electricity generating technologies. The FIT will take effect from 1 April 2010, allowing homeowners to claim cash back for electricity they generate using technologies such as solar panels, small wind turbines and micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council, said:
“Today’s announcement will help make small scale renewables a more attractive and viable option, not just for householders, but for communities and businesses. It will also help support an emerging green industry and generate high quality jobs.

“However, the best time to install renewables is once energy use has been reduced. That is why we also need ways for householders and businesses to spread the upfront costs of low carbon refurbishment over time. Although Government is trialling such schemes they need to be fast tracked, working alongside Feed In Tariffs to make green homes, offices and other buildings a reality.”
