Who we are

UKGBC is uniting the UK building industry using sustainability as a catalyst to positively transform the places people use every day.

A charity with over 700 member organisations spanning the entire sector, we represent the voice of the industry’s current and future leaders who are striving for transformational change.

UKGBC was launched by the construction and property industry at the Ecobuild exhibition in London in February 2007. We were originally established to offer clarity, cohesion and leadership to a disparate sector, and to campaign for a sustainable built environment. We were set up with the invaluable help and commitment of a core group of founding members many of whom are still active members today.

Our team

We are made up of a team of nearly 40 staff, governed by a Board of Trustees. Our network includes all our member organisations so we also have a Members’ Advisory Group. While we are each distinct, we like to blur the lines between our staff, members and Trustees, and view all as crucial in working together for a better built environment.

Our staff focus on membership and networks, research and innovation, policy and advocacy, and education and leadership.

Our Trustees are made up of a diverse group of built environment leaders who oversee the strategic execution of UKGBC’s mission.

Our Members’ Advisory Group provides strategic advice, feedback, and support to the UKGBC on our key priorities, programmes and membership activities.

Our global network

UKGBC is part of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) network, a global network of over 70 national Green Building Councils transforming the places we live, work, play, heal and learn.

We believe green buildings can and must be at the centre of our lives. Our changing climate means we must reshape the way we grow and build, enabling people to thrive both today and tomorrow.

Our link with the WorldGBC global network gives our members unique access to international best practices, global projects, and international events such as the UN climate negotiations.

  • Our office

We share our office with the World GBC team and together we refurbished our London headquarters in 2016. Drawing upon a design team sourced from our own membership, we sought to challenge industry thinking in terms of what is achievable in a small scale fit out.

The project achieved the lowest embodied carbon footprint ever recorded for an office refurbishment in the UK and is an exemplar for sustainable office refurbishment. Read all about it here.
