Problem Addressed

Landfill Glass takes a long time to break down. In fact, it can take a glass bottle one million years to decompose in the environment, possibly even more if it’s in a landfill.  The UK business sector still has a lot of work to do to recycle glass – bars, restaurants and pubs currently throw away over 129,000 tonnes of glass every year into landfill.

Every tonne of glass recycled saves 246 kg of carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) as well as decreasing the energy needed to make glass and reducing reliance on virgin raw materials. Glass is 100% and endlessly recyclable. In fact, it’s often seen as the perfect circular economy material. Ecorok and Decorok manufactured by Diamik Glass utilise waste glass and turn them into beautiful sustainable worksurfaces.

Overview Of Start-up

Diamik Glass mitigates the need for customers to use high CO2 mined aggregates from imported from all over the world and replace them with a worksurface that can offer the same benefits but in a locally sourced and manufactured product. They offer architects and designers a sustainable alternative when specifying projects that traditionally use these imported aggregates.

Diamik Glass produce two different products.  Decorok, which is 100% recycled glass fused together, and Ecorok, which is 85% recycled glass bonded together with added pigments. They are the only one’s, of this kind, to be manufactured on a commercial scale in the UK. The products are suitable for both domestic and commercial applications.

What Makes The Start-up Innovative

Ecorok and Decorok are using waste products that would otherwise end up in landfill, they have been researching and developing this product for two years in order to achieve a stable and viable alternative to traditional building surfaces. Their product offers an option in a wide range of applications in high use, high wear areas and in buildings wanting to improve the circular economy. Products can help reduce waste during design and construction, and at the end of life can be fully recycled again and again.

How The Start-up Has Been Designed To Scale Up Quickly

Diamik Glass will scale up by investing in new manufacturing facilities in the UK which will bring down the cost of their products, meaning they can offer recycled surface solutions to a much wider customer base and therefore save more carbon and significantly reduce glass in landfill.

Diamik Glass are looking at further development of technology that would allow them to use more waste materials in production of sustainable work surfaces.
