Utopi
Problem addressed
Minimising the carbon output of the operation-stage of a building; in other words, maximising building efficiency and promoting processes and strategies for carbon reduction in line with CCC findings and UKGBC’s vision.
Overview of start-up
Utopi is an integrated IoT service that uses multi-sensor technology to gather data and, using a machine learning algorithm, optimise energy use over the lifetime of the building, reducing carbon output by optimising building efficiency. Sensors gather data on light, noise, air quality, temperature, humidity and motion.
The residents app enables Utopi to engage with communities through gamification to take action. It provides transparent data to residents so they can see their impact.
What makes the start-up innovative
The hardware offering is bespoke, and the software is also bespoke – it’s being developed in house by Utopi. In combination this will give a unique overview of building management, allowing Utopi to inform owner-operators of ways to reduce emissions throughout the building lifecycle via remote fixes, accurate PPM, and live asset monitoring.
How the start-up has been designed to scale up quickly
Utopi is targeting a number of high value customers in the private sector, with the eventual intention of targeting public sector as well. Current focus is on the built to rent sector with established clients (including a major UK BtR developer) for whom it provides consultancy from design stage onward. It is developing a rules-based decision engine, and also a multi sensor that can be sold at volume much cheaper than current equivalent hardware. Utopi has also successfully secured investment earlier in 2022.
