PRESS RELEASE: UKGBC responds to Prime Minister’s Speech at the Conservative Party Conference
The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has today responded to Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s, closing speech at the Conservative Party Conference.
Simon McWhirter, Director of Communications, Policy & Places at UKGBC:
“We welcome the key themes of the Prime Minister’s speech today, including the importance of skills, investment, good quality homes, and partnership with the private sector in delivering levelling-up. However, further details of key measures required to support a central role for the green economy, and achieve the promised ‘green industrial revolution’, were disappointingly absent.
Unlocking the economic potential of sustainability in our sector, and the wider green economy, will be crucial if the Prime Minister is to successfully level-up the country and build a sustainable, prosperous, resilient economy for future generations. With less than thirty days until the COP summit in Glasgow, the industry needs certainty and substance if its full potential to support a green recovery, and deliver this vision, is to be realised.
We hope the forthcoming Spending Review, Heat and Buildings Strategy and Net Zero Strategy provide this clarity, and notably recognise the vital importance of a national retrofit strategy for both levelling-up and reaching our net zero target.”
