Scope 3 emissions refer to carbon impacts across a company’s value chain, outside of their direct control, and represent a significant opportunity for driving carbon reductions. The consultation paper sets out draft guidance for companies who own and develop commercial real estate, with a standard process for reporting scope 3 emissions.

The guidance is tailored to the commercial real estate sector in an effort to improve understanding of relevant scope 3 impacts and reduce barriers to reporting. It will seek to clarify the reporting process and build on existing guidance, including the GHG Protocol’s ‘Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard’ and the RICS Professional Statement, ‘Whole life carbon assessment for the built environment’.

UKGBC is working with member companies Carbon Credentials, HS2 and TFT to produce the guidance and the project is being supported by BBP, BPF and RICS.

Feedback is being sought from businesses and stakeholders throughout the construction and property industry. The consultation paper is now available on the UKGBC website and responses can be submitted online up until 31 May. A webinar will be hosted on 16 May to provide an overview of the consultation and allow participants to ask questions about the process and guidance. For further details please contact Karl Desai.

The guidance is being produced by UKGBC as part of its Advancing Net Zero programme, which is aiming to drive the transition to a net zero carbon built environment in the UK. The programme is kindly supported by Lead Partner the Redevco Foundation and Programme Partners: BAM Construct UK, Berkeley Group, Grosvenor Britain & Ireland, Hoare Lea and JLL.

UKGBC’s Advancing Net Zero programme forms part of a global campaign led by the World Green Building Council which is calling for all buildings to be net zero carbon by 2050, and all new buildings to achieve this by 2030. Globally, leading businesses and regional authorities are already committing to spearheading this transition, UK signatories to the WorldGBC commitment include: Berkeley Group, Bruntwood, Cundall, Elementa (part of Integral Group), Mayor of London, the Scottish Government and Shaw Contract.
