The latest UKGBC Wellbeing Lab focussed on the retail sector, with participants from across the value chain taking part in a series of practical workshops and working groups to test and evaluate wellbeing design interventions on live retail projects. The teams produced a compendium of experience, having followed advice and guidance presented in UKGBC’s landmark report: Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Retail: the impact of green buildings on people and profit.

Participants in the Wellbeing Lab included: BuroHappold, Carbon Credentials, CETEC, Ellandi, EVORA, Forbo, Haskoll, Hoare Lea, JLL, John Lewis Partnership, LaSalle, Liverpool ONE, M&S, Northern Rail, M&S, StudioDS, The Crown Estate, and Workman.

At the event, UKGBC’s director of policy and places, John Alker, chaired the following panel discussion looking at the insights gained over the course of the programme:

Rich Francis, Monomoy Company
Connor McCauley, JLL
Diba Salam, StudioDS
Zoe Young, M&S

Amid lots of productive discussion, here are some key takeaways from the evening:

“Interest in the wellbeing agenda continues to increase unabated as the business case for wellbeing-centred design interventions becomes ever clearer.

“It has been fantastic to see this group of leading built environment businesses demonstrate how prioritising the wellbeing of retail staff and customers drives real value and strengthens their businesses.”

John Alker, director of policy and places at UKGBC

“We can test out all those parameters without having to pay for them”.

Diba Salam of Studio DS, talking about the use of virtual reality technology in allowing developers to experiment with a huge array of options.
