The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has appointed Michael Cross, Principal Sustainable Development Manager at Willmott Dixon, to its Board of Trustees.

Michael’s appointment, at the invitation of the current Board, has been made as part of UKGBC’s policy to ensure Future Leaders are represented at the highest level of the organisation’s governance structure. Each year, one alumnus of UKGBC’s prestigious Future Leaders programme is invited to join the Board for a two-year term.

Michael completed UKGBC’s Future Leaders programme last year, commenting at the time that the experience gave him an understanding of how to tackle the big challenges facing the built environment and taught him the perseverance required to achieve real breakthrough innovation.

He is a Principal Sustainable Development Manager within Re-Thinking, Willmott Dixon’s award-winning internal sustainability consultancy, where he chairs the internal Sustainable Development Leaders Forum. Since joining Re-Thinking in 2014 he has been responsible for providing strategic advice on resource efficiency and carbon reduction, helping the Willmott Dixon Group address the risks and opportunities of a low-carbon and more sustainable built environment. Under Michael’s leadership the Group became the first in its sector to be accredited to the Carbon Trust Supply Chain Standard. Michael is a regular industry speaker on carbon and energy management and is a Chartered Environmentalist.

David Partridge, Managing Partner at Argent and Chair of the Board of Trustees at UKGBC said:

“I am very pleased to welcome Michael to UKGBC’s Board of Trustees. He has proven himself to be an astute individual and I have every confidence that he will make a valuable contribution to the governance of the organisation.

Our policy of appointing Future Leaders to the Board demonstrates the importance we place on listening to the next generation of leaders in trying to overcome the broad challenges we face as an industry. This practice contributes to UKGBC’s own resilience and plays an important role in further equipping our Future Leaders with relevant skills and experiences.”

Michael Cross, Principal Sustainable Development Manager at Willmott Dixon said:

“I’m very excited to be joining the Board of Trustees, it is a great opportunity to work with industry leaders and enable transformative change in the built environment. I look forward playing my part growing the UKGBC and promoting the importance and potential of our Future Leaders.”

The board meeting at which Michael was appointed also marked the end of Alex Willey’s two-year term as a Future Leader Trustee. Alex is Head of Regeneration Projects at Clarion Housing Group and was the very first Future Leader appointed to the Board, in 2016. The Board of Trustees wish to thank Alex for her exemplary service over the past two years and wish her well for the future as her leadership journey goes from strength to strength.
