Problem Addressed

Each year, the UK sends 139m tonnes of mineral wastes and soils from construction sites to landfill and in their place imports a similar amount of aggregates from quarries. These soils accounts for almost two thirds of total UK waste.

By transforming onsite clays & subsoils into aggregate replacement products, this revolutionary and disruptive, green technology significantly reduces the export of soils to landfill and the import of aggregates. Compared to traditional methods, this reduces the number of lorry movements and all the associated Carbon emissions by around 96% and reduce clients’ costs by around 40%.

To put this into context for example, on a residential site of approx 200 homes, Ecofill saves 10,000 wagon movements and 270 tonnes of Co2.

Ecofill can also provide their “R-Ecofill” solution, which is a unique process for the treatment and remediation of contaminated soils. The R-Ecofill solution has the potential to unlock the 21,000 stalled Brownfield sites Nationwide.

Overview Of Start-up

As former civil engineers and quarry operators, Ecofill has witnessed an antiquated and carbon intense process take place, every day, on every single construction site, around the world. The Ecofill solution provides an on-site, ex-situ technology using state-of -the-art machinery and non-corrosive, approved Ecofill binders. Their services include binder design, material production, testing and validation.

All Ecofill products meet the National Specification for Highways and Earthworks and are tested & validated by independent, UKAS accredited laboratories. As land regeneration specialists, Ecofill is a solutions provider, an innovator and here to decarbonise construction. Ecofill was created with a passion for sustainability and as a drive for change.

What Makes The Start-up Innovative?

Ecofill’s technology is this first of its kind. As innovators, they have completely evolved the way earthworks foundations are constructed by designing and developing the world’s first mobile plant machinery that processes all kinds of clays and subsoils into approved aggregate replacement products. This process takes place on site and is ex-situ.

Via a globally patent-protected technology, the clays and subsoils are processed through the machine and combined with the Ecofill Binders at pre-defined addition rates. Over 1000 tonnes of the Ecofill end product can be produced each day, and once laid and compacted, provide a structural material for the construction of both permanent and temporary earthworks structures for all major sectors of the built environment.

The Ecofill Machines are mobilised to site along with their specially formulated Ecofill Binders, which are all tailored to each specific project & ground type. All Ecofill Machines are accompanied by a fully trained & highly skilled Ecofill Production Supervisor.

All processes are carried out based on pre site investigation data, full testing & validation and all in line with the Ecofill Quality Management Plan which was written by AECOM.

This is a Global Solution to a Global problem.

How The Start-up Has Been Designed To Scale Up Quickly?

At Ecofill’s Innovation Hub in Selby, North Yorkshire, they have already showcased the technology and given live demonstrations of Ecofill to a significant amount of National and International construction companies and engineering consultancy firms. These early adopters have been queuing up to visit Ecofill Innovation and are responsible for major infrastructure schemes such as HS2, highways improvements and are also household names in the commercial & residential sectors.

Ecofill is now commercialising the business, executing plans offering large scale investment opportunities and have solid frameworks in place to manufacture the Ecofill machines at scale and at pace, along with the required company infrastructure.

Ecofill Ltd have secured global patent protection, end-to-end IP securing the process & machinery, a registered trademark, and the binder formulations are under a fully protected, worldwide exclusivity agreement.

Ecofill is scalable, accessible, adaptable and sustainable; reduced costs and reduced carbon going hand in hand.

In the next 5 years, Ecofill will save their clients millions of pounds, take four million lorry movements from the roads and save 90,000 tonnes of Co2.
