The Project

The Whole Life Carbon Roadmap project is a multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to build a pathway to the decarbonisation of the built environment in the UK. As part of the WorldGBC #BuildingLife project, UKGBC and 9 other European GBCs are leading the development of national roadmaps that will build a common vision and agreed actions for achieving net zero carbon in the construction, operation and demolition of buildings and infrastructure.

The UK Roadmap will consist of two key components:

  • Carbon trajectory: A 1.5° aligned science-based trajectory for reducing built environment emissions that includes targets for relevant sub-sectors.
  • Report: A comprehensive report setting out the actions, policies and processes needed to manage the net zero transition in the built environment and achieve the trajectory targets, designed to complement the sector-specific roadmaps already in progress and ensure consistency between them.

Timeline

The WLC Roadmap is an ongoing project in 2021, with an expected launch date at COP26. The draft Roadmap proposals will be developed from March to June with an industry consultation period held in June to July. The formal industry endorsement period will take place August to October.

The Project Teams

The development of the Roadmap is a co-owned process bringing together stakeholders from across the built environment industry. The project is overseen by a cross-sector Steering Group providing industry review and strategic oversight, while four Task Groups made up of cross disciplinary experts are developing the Roadmap content. The carbon modelling exercise will be undertaken by external consultants with Steering Group and Task Group input. The industry consultation period will seek to engage a wide variety of industry professionals to ensure the final Roadmap is as comprehensive as possible.

Each Task Group will be supported by an individual in our Next Generation cohort. These are early career professionals who will be helping deliver a net zero built environment now and in the future.
